The six lines

  1. Line 1

Set aside one's own affairs and go quickly. No fault. Consider how much to give up.

Line 1 sets aside its own affairs to support the corresponding fourth line, but the amount given still calls for judgment. Changing Line 1 makes Water below Mountain, Hexagram 4.

  2. Line 2

Constancy is beneficial; setting out brings misfortune. Without diminishing oneself, one can benefit another.

Line 2 holds its firm central position rather than rushing outward. In the traditional reading, maintaining that integrity is itself a benefit to the fifth line. Changing Line 2 makes Thunder below Mountain, Hexagram 27.

  3. Line 3

When three people travel together, their number is reduced by one. When one travels alone, a companion is found.

The arithmetic of three people and one companion closes inner Lake at Line 3. Filling that open line makes Heaven below Mountain and yields Hexagram 26.

  4. Line 4

    六四

  5. Line 5

  6. Line 6

Benefiting others without diminishing oneself. No fault; constancy is favorable, and proceeding is beneficial. One gains followers beyond one's own household.

At Line 6, benefits extend outward without impoverishing their source. Zhu Xi connects the final household phrase with the breadth of that generosity. Changing the firm top to yielding makes Earth above Lake, Hexagram 19.
