Hexagram 38

Opposition

睽Kuí

Shared ground remains while views and directions pull apart.

The Judgment

In small matters, favorable.

The Great Image

Fire above and lake below: Opposition. The exemplary person joins in common while remaining distinct.

Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

Regret vanishes. Do not pursue the lost horse; it returns by itself. Meeting a bad person brings no fault.

Line 1 does not chase the lost horse or avoid meeting the bad person. The source allows contact despite opposition. Changing the firm base to yielding makes Water below Fire, Hexagram 64.

  2. Line 2

Meeting the lord in a narrow lane. No fault.

The meeting occurs in a narrow lane at Line 2. Changing that firm center to yielding makes Thunder below Fire and yields Hexagram 21.

  3. Line 3

The cart is dragged back, and its ox is held. The person has the forehead marked and the nose cut. No beginning, but an end.

Restraint and bodily injury crowd Line 3, yet the text gives the sequence an end. Filling Lake's open upper line makes Heaven below Fire and produces Hexagram 14.

  4. Line 4

Isolated in opposition, one meets a good man. Trust is exchanged. Danger, but no fault.

Line 4 has no opposite-polarity counterpart in Line 1, yet the traditional reading finds shared character between these two firm lines. Their contact is possible amid opposition. Changing Line 4 makes Mountain above Lake, Hexagram 41.

  5. Line 5

Regret vanishes. One's own kin bites through the skin. Going onward, what fault could there be?

At Line 5, biting through skin describes how readily a bond can be renewed, like biting something soft. The traditional reading links the kin to the corresponding second line. Changing Line 5 makes Heaven above Lake, Hexagram 10.

  6. Line 6

Isolated in opposition, one sees a muddy pig and a cart full of ghosts. First the bow is drawn, then lowered. No raider, but a marriage seeker. Going forward and meeting rain: favorable.

At Line 6, estrangement first sees a pig and ghosts, then lowers the bow and recognizes a marriage approach. A yielding top turns Fire into Thunder and produces Hexagram 54, a received bond of unequal positions.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
