Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

    初九

    咸臨,貞吉。

Approaching together through shared influence. Constancy is favorable.

The first of two firm lines approaches together with the second at the bottom of the figure. If Line 1 yields, lower lake becomes water and Hexagram 7 results.

  2. Line 2

    九二

    咸臨,吉,无不利。

Approaching together through shared influence. Favorable; nothing is without benefit.

Shared approach continues at the centered second line; turning it yielding changes lower lake to thunder, leaving the bottom as the only firm line of Hexagram 24.

  3. Line 3

    六三

    甘臨,无攸利。既憂之,无咎。

A flattering approach. Nothing is beneficial. Once one is concerned about this, no fault.

The yielding third line tries to approach through pleasing words. Recognizing the problem can interrupt that course before fault deepens. Changing Line 3 to firm turns lower lake into heaven and produces Hexagram 11.

  4. Line 4

    六四

    至臨,无咎。

    Complete approach. No fault.

Line 4 approaches the first line in a proper relationship, reaching fully across the two trigrams. Changing it to firm turns upper earth to thunder and produces Hexagram 54.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
