The six lines

  1. Line 1

Undertaking a great work is beneficial. A greatly favorable result is needed for there to be no fault.

Line 1 receives support despite its low position and is charged with a great undertaking. The traditional reading makes freedom from fault depend on carrying it out well. Changing Line 1 makes Earth below Wind, Hexagram 20.

  2. Line 2

Someone adds ten pairs of tortoise shells; the gift cannot be refused. Lasting constancy is favorable. The king makes an offering to the High Deity. Favorable.

At Line 2, the valuable gift repeats the image in Hexagram 41 Line 5. Zhu Xi gives the two passages the same gift interpretation; here lasting constancy and the king’s offering are added. Changing Line 2 makes Lake below Wind, Hexagram 61.

  3. Line 3

Increase is used in calamitous affairs. No fault. With trust and centered conduct, report to the duke using a jade tablet.

Calamitous affairs and a formal report belong to Line 3, the edge of inner Thunder. Its change makes Fire below Wind and produces Hexagram 37.

  4. Line 4

Following a centered course, one reports to the duke and is heeded. It is beneficial to provide support in moving the capital.

Line 4 opens outer Wind with a report to the duke and support for moving the capital. Changing it to firm makes Heaven above Thunder and yields Hexagram 25.

  5. Line 5

A sincere, benevolent heart. Do not ask: greatly favorable. My goodness is met with sincere goodwill.

At Line 5, goodwill moves in both directions: a sincere intention to benefit others meets a sincere response. That reciprocity is the traditional reading of the repeated 有孚. Changing the firm center makes Mountain above Thunder, Hexagram 27.

  6. Line 6

No one brings increase; someone strikes instead. The heart is not constant. Misfortune.

Line 6 seeks increase but receives none and faces a blow instead. The text associates this with an inconstant heart. Changing Line 6 makes Water above Thunder, Hexagram 3.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
