Abundant resources held in a place of wide visibility.

The Judgment

Great success.

Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

No contact with harm. This is not a fault. Hardship handled with care brings no fault.

The bottom line is still outside harmful exchange. Turning it yielding changes lower heaven to wind and produces Hexagram 50.

  2. Line 2

A great cart is used for carrying. There is somewhere to go. No fault.

A great carrying cart belongs to the firm and centered second place; if this line yields, lower heaven becomes fire and the resulting figure is Hexagram 30.

  3. Line 3

A duke makes an offering to the Son of Heaven. A small person cannot do this.

At Line 3, the upper edge of inner heaven, a duke's offering carries possession into a royal relation. Making the line yielding turns the lower trigram into lake and gives Hexagram 38.

  4. Line 4

Not flaunting one’s abundance. No fault.

Firm Line 4 sits directly below the yielding ruler. Restraining the display of abundance avoids pressing that advantage against the ruler’s position. Changing the line to yielding turns upper fire to mountain and produces Hexagram 26.

  5. Line 5

Trust is returned by others, and dignity is maintained. Favorable.

Reciprocal trust and dignity occupy Line 5, the yielding center. Firming it removes the figure's only broken line, producing Hexagram 1.

  6. Line 6

Help comes from heaven. Favorable; nothing is without benefit.

Help from heaven is placed at the firm top line, whose yielding change makes upper fire thunder and results in Hexagram 34.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
