Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

Repairing what the father has spoiled. With a capable son, the deceased father is without fault. Danger, then a favorable end.

The opening line repairs damage inherited from the father, allowing the son’s work to restore the family’s standing. Changing Line 1 to firm turns lower wind to heaven and produces Hexagram 26.

  2. Line 2

Repairing what the mother has spoiled. Do not insist on rigid constancy.

Firm, centered Line 2 addresses damage inherited from the mother. The correction calls for tact rather than forcing a rigid standard onto the relationship. Changing the line to yielding turns lower wind to mountain and produces Hexagram 52.

  3. Line 3

Repairing what the father has spoiled. There is slight regret, but no great fault.

Line 3 applies a forceful correction to inherited damage; its firmness can go too far, bringing slight regret without great fault. Changing this line to yielding turns lower wind to water and produces Hexagram 4.

    Read Line 3 in context
  4. Line 4

Indulging what the father has spoiled. Continuing in this direction meets difficulty.

Line 4 allows inherited disorder too much room instead of repairing it. The warning concerns what continued indulgence leaves unresolved. Changing this line to firm turns upper mountain to fire and produces Hexagram 50.

    Read Line 4 in context
  5. Line 5

Repairing what the father has spoiled and receiving praise.

At the yielding fifth place, repair earns praise through able support rather than solitary force. Changing Line 5 to firm turns upper mountain to wind and produces Hexagram 57.

    Read Line 5 in context
  6. Line 6

Not serving kings or lords; pursuing a loftier undertaking.

The firm top line stands outside active office and declines service to kings or lords in favor of a higher aim. Changing Line 6 to yielding turns upper mountain to earth and produces Hexagram 46.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
