Hexagram 11

Peace

泰Tài

Unlike forces meet and enter a fertile exchange.

The Judgment

The small departs and the great comes. Favorable. Success.

The Great Image

Heaven and earth exchange: Peace. The ruler shapes their courses, supports what suits their seasons, and thereby aids the people.

Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

Pulling up cogon grass brings its tangled roots and the whole cluster. An advance is favorable.

The bottom line pulls a cluster of connected roots rather than a single stalk; if it yields, lower heaven becomes wind and the figure changes to Hexagram 46.

  2. Line 2

Make room for the uncultivated; cross the river without a boat; do not neglect what is distant. Let factional ties fall away, and act in accord with the middle course.

Line 2 is firm and centered; its text reaches across the uncultivated, the river, and what is distant. Making it yielding changes lower heaven to fire and produces Hexagram 36.

  3. Line 3

No level ground is without a slope; no departure is without return. Constancy amid difficulty brings no fault. Do not be anxious about what is certain to return. In food there is blessing.

The third line closes inner heaven at the point where level ground turns toward a slope and departure toward return. When it yields, lower heaven becomes lake and the result is Hexagram 19.

  4. Line 4

Fluttering down, not relying on wealth, together with the neighbors. Trust is present without warning.

The neighbors descend together without relying on wealth or a warning summons; their trust makes the movement voluntary. At Line 4, changing the lower edge of upper earth to firm makes that trigram thunder and produces Hexagram 34.

  5. Line 5

Di Yi gives his younger sister in marriage. Through this blessing, greatly favorable.

The marriage arranged by Di Yi stands at the centered fifth place of the upper trigram. A firm line there changes earth to water and forms Hexagram 5.

  6. Line 6

The city wall falls back into its moat. Do not use the army. Orders are announced from one’s own town. Difficulty even with constancy.

At the yielding top line, the city wall collapses into its own moat, undoing the work that raised it. Changing the line to firm makes upper earth a mountain and produces Hexagram 26.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
