Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

Fellowship at the gate. No fault.

The open gate stands at Line 1, before fellowship narrows into an inner group; turning this firm line yielding changes lower fire to mountain and produces Hexagram 33.

  2. Line 2

Fellowship confined to the ancestral clan. This brings constraint.

Line 2 is the figure's sole yielding line, centered within lower fire; here fellowship is confined to the ancestral clan. If it becomes firm, all six lines are unbroken and the result is Hexagram 1.

  3. Line 3

Armed troops hide in the thicket and climb the high mound. For three years they do not rise.

Hidden troops and the high lookout occupy Line 3, at the top of the inner fire trigram. Changing this firm line to yielding makes the lower trigram thunder and gives Hexagram 25.

  4. Line 4

Climbing the wall, unable to attack. Favorable.

At Line 4, the claimant has climbed the wall but does not carry out the attack. The Image attributes that restraint to what is right, rather than a lack of force. Changing this line to yielding turns upper heaven to wind and produces Hexagram 37.

  5. Line 5

In fellowship, first loud cries and weeping, then laughter. Great armies overcome the separation, and the parties meet.

The centered fifth line carries the sequence from cries through opposing armies to a meeting, and making it yielding turns upper heaven into fire to produce the doubled-fire Hexagram 30.

  6. Line 6

Fellowship at the outskirts. No regret.

Fellowship remains at the outskirts at the uppermost line, beyond the gate and clan of the earlier lines. A yielding top changes upper heaven to lake, forming Hexagram 49.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
