Hexagram 12

Stagnation

否Pǐ

Upper and lower withdraw, leaving no shared passage.

The Judgment

In obstruction, human fellowship fails. An exemplary person's constancy finds no advantage. The great departs and the small comes.

The Great Image

Heaven and earth do not exchange: Stagnation. The exemplary person keeps virtue out of view to avoid danger and does not accept the honor of office and salary.

Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

Pulling up cogon grass brings its tangled roots and the whole cluster. Constancy is favorable. Success.

A connected cluster of roots occupies the yielding bottom line. Firming this place turns lower earth into thunder and changes the figure to Hexagram 25.

  2. Line 2

Patient compliance is favorable for the small person. The great person endures the obstruction and achieves success.

The centered second line bears obstruction differently for the small person and the great person. A firm line here changes lower earth to water, yielding Hexagram 6.

  3. Line 3

    六三

    Harboring shame.

Shame is held at Line 3, the upper boundary of inner earth; turn that line firm and earth becomes mountain, producing Hexagram 33.

  4. Line 4

There is a mandate. No fault. Those of like kind share in the blessing.

The mandate appears at Line 4, where the outer heaven trigram begins and like kinds share the blessing. If this line yields, heaven changes to wind and the figure is Hexagram 20.

  5. Line 5

Obstruction comes to rest. Favorable for the great person. 'It may perish, it may perish,' tied fast to a bushy mulberry.

Obstruction comes to rest at Line 5, the firm center, while the repeated thought of loss remains. Making this line yielding turns upper heaven into fire and gives Hexagram 35.

  6. Line 6

Obstruction is overturned. First obstruction, afterward joy.

The overturning of obstruction is placed at the firm top line, whose yielding change makes upper heaven a lake and results in Hexagram 45.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
