Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

Trust does not last to the end; there is disorder and gathering. If one calls out, a clasp of hands turns to laughter. Do not worry. Going brings no fault.

Line 1 moves between an unfinished bond, disorder, and a call for contact. Changing this yielding line makes Thunder below Lake, Hexagram 17. Following offers a comparison with the unfinished gathering and its call for contact.

  2. Line 2

Being drawn forward is favorable and without fault. With trust, even a simple seasonal offering is fitting.

Line 2 pairs being drawn into the gathering with trust and a modest offering. Its change replaces lower Earth with Water, forming Hexagram 47. Both figures’ second lines mention a sacrificial offering, setting the ritual within gathering and within constraint.

  3. Line 3

Gathering with sighs. Nothing is beneficial. Going brings no fault, though there is a little cause for regret.

Sighing accompanies the wish to gather at Line 3; going is without fault, though not free of difficulty. Its change makes Mountain below Lake, Hexagram 31. The contrast is between the present difficulty of joining and a figure concerned with influence and response.

  4. Line 4

    Greatly favorable. No fault.

Line 4 says greatly favorable and no fault; it supplies no additional scene. Changing this firm line makes Water above Earth, Hexagram 8, leaving Line 5 as the only firm line. The comparison concerns gathering around a single center.

  5. Line 5

Gathering around a recognized place brings no fault. Where trust is absent, great and lasting constancy lets regret disappear.

Line 5 holds a position around which people gather, yet trust is not assured. Its change turns upper Lake into Thunder, Hexagram 16; Line 4 is then the sole firm line. The comparison concerns where a gathering centers.

  6. Line 6

Sighs, tears, and a running nose. No fault.

Tears close the sequence at Line 6, the gathering's far edge. Changing the line gives Hexagram 12, with earth below and heaven above no longer meeting.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
