Hexagram 16

Enthusiasm

豫Yù

Shared enthusiasm that gathers people into action, with a risk of self-indulgence.

The Judgment

Establishing lords and mobilizing armies is beneficial.

The Great Image

Thunder bursts from the earth: Enthusiasm. The former kings made music to honor virtue and offered it lavishly to the High God, pairing that worship with offerings to their ancestors.

Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

    初六

    Proclaiming one’s delight. Misfortune.

The first line boasts of its delight because it relies on strong support above. The warning concerns that overconfidence. Changing Line 1 to firm turns lower earth to thunder and produces Hexagram 51.

  2. Line 2

Firm as stone, not waiting to the end of the day. Constancy is favorable.

Stone-like firmness and action before day's end are assigned to the centered second line. When this yielding line becomes firm, lower earth turns to water and the result is Hexagram 40.

  3. Line 3

Looking upward for pleasure brings regret. Delay also brings regret.

Line 3 looks up to the sole firm line for satisfaction instead of standing securely in its own position. Regret calls for a change in that dependence. Changing Line 3 to firm turns lower earth to mountain and produces Hexagram 62.

  4. Line 4

The source of enthusiasm: much is gained. Do not doubt. Friends gather around.

Line 4 is the source of shared enthusiasm and the figure’s only firm place. Its confidence allows the other lines to gather around it. Changing this line to yielding produces the six broken lines of Hexagram 2.

  5. Line 5

A lasting illness, yet one does not die.

Persistent illness occupies Line 5, the yielding center directly above the hexagram's firm source. Turning it firm changes upper thunder to lake and produces Hexagram 45.

  6. Line 6

Lost in pleasure. Even after it has taken hold, a change of course brings no fault.

The top line has become absorbed in pleasure, but the text leaves room to correct that settled habit. Changing Line 6 to firm turns upper thunder into fire and produces Hexagram 35.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
