Grace

賁Bì

Form made legible without mistaking surface for substance.

The Judgment

Success. There is a little benefit in going forward.

The Great Image

Bottom to top

The six lines

  1. Line 1

Adorning the toes, leaving the carriage and going on foot.

Adorned toes, leaving the carriage, and walking are placed at Line 1, which is firm. When it yields, lower fire becomes mountain and the figure is the doubled-mountain Hexagram 52.

  2. Line 2

    六二

Adorning the beard beneath the chin.

The beard beneath the chin is adorned at the centered yielding line. Firming Line 2 changes lower fire to heaven and produces Hexagram 26.

  3. Line 3

Adorned and glistening with moisture. Lasting constancy is favorable.

Line 3 closes inner fire with moist, glistening adornment and a charge of lasting constancy; made yielding, it turns fire into thunder and gives Hexagram 27.

  4. Line 4

Adorned in plain white. A white horse comes as if winged. Not a raider, but a marriage seeker.

Plain white adornment and the winged white horse appear at Line 4, the yielding base of upper mountain. Firming this place changes mountain to fire and produces Hexagram 30.

    Read Line 4 in context
  5. Line 5

Adornment in the hill garden. The bundle of silk is meager. Difficulty, then a favorable end.

The hill garden and meager roll of silk belong to the centered fifth line. If it becomes firm, upper mountain changes to wind and the result is Hexagram 37.

  6. Line 6

    Plain white adornment. No fault.

Plain white adornment stands at the firm top line, whose yielding change turns upper mountain into earth and forms Hexagram 36.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
