The six lines

  1. Line 1

Meeting a matching lord. Though equal in standing, there is no fault. Going wins esteem.

Line 1 meets a matching lord; the traditional reading takes 旬 here as equality. Its change makes Mountain below Thunder, Hexagram 62. The comparison sets mutual standing beside the care for small matters in that figure.

  2. Line 2

The screen is so dense that the Dipper is seen at noon. Going meets suspicion and hostility. Sincerity that opens understanding is favorable.

Noon is obscured enough for the Dipper to appear, and advancing meets suspicion and hostility. The line favors sincerity that opens understanding. Changing Line 2 makes Heaven below Thunder, Hexagram 34, contrasting obscured light with great power.

  3. Line 3

The covering grows so dense that a small star is seen at noon. The right arm is broken. No fault.

Even a small star is visible at noon, and the right arm is broken: Line 3 combines obscurity with impaired action. Changing it makes Thunder below Thunder, Hexagram 51. Repeated shock offers a contrasting image to the blocked light.

  4. Line 4

The screen grows full; the Dipper is seen at noon. Meeting an equal lord is favorable.

The Dipper appears at noon under the same dense screen as in Line 2, but Line 4 meets an equal lord and receives a favorable verdict. Its change makes Earth above Fire, Hexagram 36. Both passages pair light with concealment.

  5. Line 5

Brilliance arrives. Celebration and praise follow. Favorable.

Brilliance, celebration, and praise give Line 5 a favorable character. Changing it makes Lake above Fire, Hexagram 49. Abundance and revolution offer two ways to consider public recognition and established order.

  6. Line 6

The roof is enlarged while the house is screened off. Looking through the door, all is silent and no one is there. For three years, no one is seen. Misfortune.

An enlarged roof hides an empty, silent household, and the line extends the absence to three years. Changing Line 6 makes Fire above Fire, Hexagram 30. Repeated light contrasts with this concealed emptiness.

One classical protocol

In practice

A cast determines which part of a hexagram governs the reading. When one line moves, that line is read as the focus; other moving-line counts use different focus rules.
